Play Eight Off Solitaire Online
Eight Off is a highly strategic, open-card patience game that belongs to the same family as FreeCell and Baker's Game. Named after its use of eight open reserve cells, this game provides players with a unique set of movement options. Because every card is dealt face-up at the start, success relies heavily on your foresight and card sequencing skills. You can play Eight Off directly in your web browser with no download or registration required.
Rules and Setup of Eight Off
Eight Off uses a standard 52-card deck. The board is divided into three distinct areas:
-
The Tableau: Eight columns containing 48 face-up cards (six cards per column).
-
The Free Cells: Eight storage cells located above the tableau. At the start of the game, four of these cells are already occupied by the remaining four cards of the deck, leaving four cells empty and ready for use.
-
The Foundations: Four piles where you build up each suit in ascending order, starting with an Ace and ending with a King.
During play, you must adhere to the following card movement rules:
-
Build Down strictly by Same Suit: On the tableau, cards can only be built down in descending order using the matching suit. For example, you can only place a 9 of Clubs on a 10 of Clubs.
-
The King-Only Column Rule: If you manage to completely empty a tableau column, only a King - or a sequence starting with a King - can be placed in that vacant space.
-
Single Card Moves: Typically, you can only move one card at a time. However, having empty free cells effectively increases your sequence movement capacity, allowing you to move larger runs of cards together.
Key Differences: Eight Off vs. FreeCell
While Eight Off is a direct relative of FreeCell, it features more restrictive rules coupled with extra storage cells:
-
Number of Cells: FreeCell provides four open cells, all of which start empty. Eight Off provides eight cells, four of which start occupied by cards.
-
Tableau Building: FreeCell allows you to build down in alternating colors, which keeps cards highly mobile. Eight Off requires you to build down strictly in the same suit, making the tableau columns much easier to block.
-
Empty Column Rules: In FreeCell, any card can occupy an empty tableau column. In classic Eight Off, empty columns are strictly reserved for Kings, limiting your space management.
Strategic Tips for Winning Eight Off
Because of the strict suit-building constraints, Eight Off requires an organized approach to avoid locking the board:
-
Free Up the Reserve Cells Early: Since four of your eight cells start the game with cards in them, look for opportunities to move those cards onto the tableau. Clearing these occupied cells gives you the storage capacity needed to maneuver larger card sequences later.
-
Unearth the Aces: Foundations cannot begin without Aces. Scan the tableau at the start to see where the Aces are buried and focus your early moves on freeing them up.
-
Keep Your Free Cells Vacant: Do not treat your open cells as long-term storage. Try to keep as many cells empty as possible. When your cells are full, your ability to move card sequences disappears, and you are highly likely to get stuck.
-
Avoid Emptying Columns Without a King: Since only Kings can occupy empty columns, clearing a column when you do not have a King available removes a playable space from the board. Keep a card in that column until a King is ready to fill it.
